How Long Before You Start Making Money Online Working From Home?

As we all know most people go into a work from home business so to produce revenue or income and profit, except of course some of the non-profit organizations. But the sad truth is that when it comes to a work at home business and particularly internet marketing, many people simply ignore this important point: In an offline traditional business, whether a mom and dad shop, or a large franchise store like Jollibee’s, business managers know how to watch their numbers. They know that a business must make an income in order to keep running and, if it doesn’t, adjustments must be made accordingly.

Treating your business as hobbies and not real businesses is one of the reasons for the high failure rate in small businesses; work at home businesses, and internet marketing. Most of the time people often don’t treat them like real businesses due to the low costs involved and minimal technical requirements.

There are two big mistakes that usually happen:

Mistake Number One: Many people tend to get the attitude that since they have little to invest to start the business, they are unconcerned about whether they’ll make money or not, or how soon. As a result it’ll often ends up being a self-fulfilling prophecy – they’ll end up earning nothing but wasted time.

This is not just true with a work from home businesses; it is also applied with many things in life. It’s a common observation that if you come to own something that cost a great deal or required a lot of effort to achieve, you tend to value it more than something of lesser perceived value.

Now when you think that working form home biz has made some people just as much if not more money than many other offline kinds of businesses, with incomes of as much as $1 million a month or more being achieved, treating your work at home business as if it isn’t a serious or real business is a huge mistake!

Mistake Number Two: Due to a very low entry cost most people overlook the price of not making money. Most people also have a tendency not to pay attention to how much their other expense is connected with their business. They fail to realize that trips, conventions, and buying extra products or services add up over time and this surely make more loss both in terms of time and money.

For instance, let’s assume that you spend only $100 to sign up for a new work from home opportunity. Certainly it’s not a lot of money at all. Could just be the price of a cup of coffee a day and some change.

Then days go by, weeks, months, and then maybe even years, and you still aren’t making any money. Maybe you don’t think much of it because you think that you only spent $100 to get started in this business anyway.

But if you examine closely, there are true costs involved. What is it? Let’s say that in addition to your capital you also have been spending $39 each and every month on paying your businesses’ hosting and other operational expenses. And let’s also assume that you are spending $50 a month on promotions, buying leads, and PPC campaigns. Many people spend much more on Google Adwords.

In effect, even though you really haven’t paid much attention because you only invested $100 as a start up, if your online business hasn’t yet started making you money then you are already spending and losing $1,068 a year, in this hypothetical example. Again, the reality is that many people often end up spending much, much more.

Now, let’s go back to the example at the beginning of this post about a traditional offline business, like a Jollibee’s. These type of businesses usually have much higher costs associated with them, like a store lease or mortgage, equipment leases, payroll, and more. With that said, it should not be surprising for a traditional business to have to operate for months or even years before finally making a profit.

In contrary although working from home through internet marketing is not designed necessarily to make you a very large amount of money in just one night, you can and should be able to generate an ever increasing residual income for yourself over time, and starting in relatively short order.

Each individual approaches a new work from home business differently. While some aggressive people prefer to roll their sleeves up and dig right in expecting to start making money from their work at home biz almost immediately, others prefer to first spend time learning more about their new home based business, and obtaining any available online training.

With that said, it’s understandable, if you choose to take a few weeks or even a month to prepare for your new home based business. You must take note, however, that if it is your goal to start making money online right away, it is entirely realistic with most work from home businesses to start earning considerable amount of money within as little as 30 days.

Surely within 60-90 days you will want to start seeing some kind of pay-off in return for your time and efforts. It should not take more than 6 months before positively starting to see income coming in. The ideal is that you should try whenever possible to not only earn enough money to cover your original startup costs but you absolutely should be making an extra profit within this time.

If after 30 to 90 days or 6 months maximum, you are not yet making a profit then you should seriously start evaluating everything.

In conclusion:
  1. You should always consider tracking all of your directly related work at home business expenses. This includes how much you spend on promotions, leads, operational expenses, PPC campaigns, and the time and effort you spend. You must add these expenses to your original startup costs.
  2. Determine your profit or how much money you’ve lost and/or are losing. Simply subtract how much money you’ve earned from number one above (this is your total expenses) and this will tell you how much money you’ve made (your profit).
  3. To reiterate: If after some 30 to 90 days, 6 months maximum, you are not making a considerable profit, you should seriously reevaluate!
It’s better not to continue down the same path if you are only spending more money than you are earning, and not making any profit in return.

Keep in mind that except for a not-profit pursuit, the purpose of having your own work from home business is to make money. Lastly, in order to make money online working from home you have to actually make more money than you spend.
